Groveshire Yorkies

          Hi, we are
          Preston and Mary Lou Groves,
          the proud owners of GROVESHIRE YORKIES.
          Mary Lou's love of the yorkie goes back to when she was a
          young girl and mine began in 1989 (35 years ago!)
          when we bought our first little girl, Sapphire.

          Our Kennel became registered in 1996 when we finally
          decided that it was time to share our prized
          possessions with the rest of the world.
          We have now incorporated some of the top kennel names
          in North America into our line.
          We pride ourselves on the fact that we only breed
          a couple of litters per year.
          When available, our puppies only go to
          CAREFULLY chosen homes.
          Our puppies have EXCELLENT temperaments
          and are raised in a loving home environment
          where they all socialize together.
          All puppies come with a health guarantee
          and are sold on a spay/neuter CKC Non-Breeding contract.
          We always keep our puppies for a minimum of 12-14 weeks
          to ensure that they are socially
          ready before going to their new homes.

          I am a breeder.
          I spend a lifetime learning pedigrees, going over dogs,
          talking and learning from those in my breed and those outside it.
          I raise each litter as if I gave birth to them
          and spend an equal amount of time finding them loving forever homes.
          I only put puppies on this planet that I think will be the healthiest (mentally and physically)
          and nicest examples of their breed.
          I support each family who choses one of my puppies
          and let them know they are now a part of our extended family.
          I am there if one needs to come back
          and will aggressively pursue the return of one of my dogs if its in the wrong place.
          I support my breed in rescue and education.
          I hold them when they arrive and leave this world, not only my own,
          but my brethren in the fancy.
          I share my knowledge and socialize my dogs
          so that they will be the advertisement for my dedication.
          I don't keep track of the money and time I put in to my love of dogs,
          it would not be true measure of how I feel.
          I support my friends in the fancy, because it takes a village sometimes
          and only WE know how things are for us.
          The price I charge for my puppies is never profit, but investment in the next generation.
          I will not be ashamed of who I am,
          I work hard at being a good dog person and encouraging others to be the same.
          I am a breeder
          and I am proud of it.

          BUYER BEWARE
          Beware of buying puppies produced by puppy mills, backyard breeders, and breeders offering many breeds.
          The background of the dams and sires are usually unknown and they usually don't screen for inherited problems, therefore health clearances are not given.
          These businesses produce a large number of dogs so human contact is practically non-existent.
          Puppy Mills are often the source of dogs sold through Pet Shops.
          Follow the Canadian Kennel Club guidelines when purchasing a puppy of any breed.
          A copy of a brochure titled "Making the Right Choice" can be obtained from the CKC website www.ckc.ca.
          REMEMBER---Always insist upon being provided with a signed bill of sale stating the puppy is being sold as a purebred.
          WARNING SIGN: It is against the law in Canada for a breeder to offer you a purebred dog at one price with papers, and another price without papers.

          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
          WHY BUY A PUREBRED?
          The major benefits of buying a purebred dog include having a fairly safe set of assumptions about what the dog will be when it grows up, especially in terms of temperament and personality. Also, the expected size of the dog, which may be very important to the apartment dweller. In addition to assumptions, there are facts that are reliable --- facts about the history and development of the breed, facts about the breed's general performance, facts about specialized performance activities in which that breed excels. If the dog comes from a reliable and responsible breeder, that breeder would have been watching and evaluating the puppy from birth and will be able to tell you exactly if the puppy might or might not be suitable for you.
          Here are some of our pets.....
          SINGH---Our pride and Joy
          Singh was a special little girl. At a very young age, she developed Aspiration Pneumonia. She got sick very quickly and we rushed her to a Vet one Sunday afternoon. Our regular Veterinarian was not on call. Another great Veterinarian that we used back then, lived approximately 1 hour away. We intended to go there initially and had even called ahead to say we were on our way. But Singh worsened and we immediately went to another local clinic. Here, we met Dr."Singh" (hence, where our little baby got her name). Immediately, Dr. Singh grabbed the tiny puppy and listened to her chest with the stethoscope. He took immediate control of the situation. Dr. Singh was wonderful and we ultimately took Singh home to his own home, with a course of antibiotics. Unfortunately, however, within a few days, Singh had a major reaction to the antibiotic. She began to seizure. We immediately took her to the Vet (our regular Vet this time, as Dr. Singh wasn't working) and she was given rectal valium to treat the seizures. Despite several doses at the clinic and by me back at home, nothing helped. She was dying, I was sure. In 25 hours, I witnessed 19 grand mal seizures. I shampooed and dried her, making her beautiful, for her passing (or so I thought). All of a sudden, the seizures stopped and she was back to normal. I now assume that it coincided with the time the antibiotic was finally out her system.
          Singh was an absolute joy and we loved her immensely. She went on to live a healthy life until she was 7 years old. She went to sllp one day and just didn't wake up. She had a heart attack. It was heart-breaking.
          ~~~~~~~~~~~

          As you know, not all dogs are meant to be show dogs. As with most breeders, we have a few dogs that have never ventured into the show ring. MAZIE is the very first puppy we ever bred. She was sold to a pet home, but came back after a week or so, as the owners found the house-breaking to be difficult. We initially planned to re-sell her, but we fell in love with her all over again, and decided to keep her.

          ~~~~~~~
          Next we have FERGIE,who broke our hearts when she passed away February, 2010. She was almost 15 years old. Fergie was bred by Linda Dahn (Aero Yorkies) in British Columbia. When she was 8 yrs old, Fergie and her daughter made the long flight here from BC to go to a new home here in Newfoundland. We were really just picking up the dogs and placing them with the new owners, as a favor to our good friend, Linda. The new home didn't work out. Rather than send them all the way back to BC, we looked for another home here in Newfoundland. Unfortunately, we couldn't find someone to take both the mom and daughter together. At around the same time, our beloved yorkie, Sapphire, passed away. Fergie somehow worked her way into Preston's heart and he decided he just couldn't live without her. Fergie was with us ever since. She slept on my pillow every night and although she was almost 15 yrs old, she still acted like a puppy and demanded to get her own way. If she wanted to get a drink of water at night or if she wanted to go potty, she would scratch at my head until I woke up. And if that doesn't work, she would proceed to try and wake up Preston. Finally, if all else failed, she would toddle over to the doggy stairs that we have next to our bed and walk down the stairs herself. She was so funny!Life will never be same without our "Ferg the werg".
